The Agriturismo, La Vecchia Fontana, is an old stone-built farmhouse, situated on the borders of the National Park of Gran Sasso, with spectacular views of the valleys of Fino river. About 15km distant is the Lago di Penne, a WWF reserve and at Arsita ( 7km ) there is the Museo del Lupo, a museum dedicated to the wolf, one of the inhabitants of the National Park. Nearby you will find a reserve for the Abruzzese Chamois and the waterfalls of the Vitello D’Oro. You can also visit the Museum of M.U.T.A.C, at Picciano with exhibits of peasant art and traditions ( about 20km ). For the more adventurous, you can trek to the “Cima della Rocca”, and admire the spectacular views of the Gran Sasso, Monte Camicia and the distant Adriatic and much of the provinces of Teramo and Pescara. A stay at the Agriturismo is ideal for those seeking peace, tranquillity and relaxation in a welcoming, family atmosphere.
The Agriturismo sleeps up to 16 people, in five spacious, well aired rooms, with en-suite bathrooms and TV. There is also a double room on the ground floor for those who cannot manage stairs. The restaurant seats up to 45 people. We have recently added a covered terrace to the rear of the property, where you can dine and take in the wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. Beside the main house is a garden with play area for children, where they can play in complete safety. The house also has disabled facilities.
The History

The Agriturismo La Vecchia Fontana was born from the desire of our family to transform the old paternal home ( which had remained empty since building a new home on the main road ) into a restaurant and a property capable of offering board and lodging to those wanting to experience restful holidays immersed in the beautiful countryside, in peace and tranquillity and in a family atmosphere.

Our project began in 1997 and continues even today as we constantly seek to improve the facilities we can offer our guests.

The name “ La Vecchia Fontana “ ( which means the Old Fountain ) derives from the the well which was first tapped on 20th November 1948, and which remained an important local feature for many years. Immediately after the war, with Italy struggling to renew it’s water network, the provision of clean drinking water gave hope and opportunity to extremely poor people who lived the hard country life and who, before it’s construction, had to carry water for themselves and their animals in huge pots on their heads. This was usually the job of womenfolk, so the well represented a significant improvement in their lives.

The arrival of running water was truly a miracle, something unthinkable in those times and the spring provided water for more than 50 local people and their livestock. This was the starting point for our farm and things looked good for the future and the growth of an undeveloped and economically marginal area.

We are situated almost at the foot of the Gran Sasso and therefore at an altitude where farming was difficult, particularly because of the often severe winters. An often forgotten region, but blessed with amazing landscapes, views which reach to the sea, and fascinating and unique wildlife.
